Kidney Stones Are Removed With Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic Kidney Stone Surgery

Kidney stones that cause pain equivalent to labor pains and various health problems especially infection are removed through laparoscopic surgical “percutaneous” surgery that is one of the operations performed for kidney stones using high technology.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Biri, lecturer in the Urology Department of the School of Medicine of Gazi University (GU), stated to the AA reporter that percutaneous kidney stone surgery is frequently performed for larger stones and stones located in the lower half of the kidney, and the method is currently performed for almost every stone in the kidney regardless of size.

Biri said that percutaneous kidney stone surgeries take an average of 30-55 minutes, the patient is discharged and return to normal life in a very short time.

Stating that percutaneous kidney stone surgery is a laparoscopic technique, Biri added:

“Compared to the classical open surgery method, this is an extremely comfortable, less pain-inducing method with a very short operation time and a very short hospital stay and high patient satisfaction. Today, it is a technique close to being the gold standard in the treatment of kidney stones. Compared to open surgery, this technique, which provides many advantages for both the physician and the patient, shortens the hospitalization and return to normal life, reduces the risk of infection, causes much less pain and no scar”.

Stating that the disease can recur although kidney stones can be treated surgically, Biri pointed out the importance of fluid intake in the prevention of kidney stone disease.

Biri said that when a daily fluid intake of 2.5 liters is exceeded, kidney stone formation is reduced by 50 to 65 percent.

Instead Of A 20 Cm Incision, Surgery Is Performed Through A 7-8 mm Hole.

Op. Dr. Mustafa Kirac, an urologist, stated that kidney stones are common in Turkey and its incidence is increasing gradually.

Expressing that kidney stones are seen in the young patient population, especially twice as often in men compared to women, Kirac stated that many factors are effective in stone formation.

Stating that genetic predisposition and improper eating habits are the main factors, Kirac said that kidney stones manifest themselves with pain and sometimes bleeding in the urine and frequent urination are among the symptoms.

Kirac said that kidney stones can sometimes remain silent for years without any symptoms and that they can be treated with many different treatment methods.

Kirac said that the most successful and least harmful method in kidney stone surgery today is percutaneous kidney stone surgery, and that the method aims to reach the kidney with a laparoscopic system and remove the stones from the kidney, and emphasized that the method is very advantageous compared to open surgery.

Stating that in traditional open kidney stone surgeries, the kidney is reached through an incision of approximately 15-20 cm on the side of the patient and the kidney is cut and the stone is removed, Kirac said, “in this method, a hospital stay of about 5-6 days and then an average of 1 to 1.5 months of recovery time are required to return to the previous state. Traditional open surgery is a method that has lost its popularity today due to long hospital stays, severe painful periods to endure and scarring problems”.

Kirac added that percutaneous kidney stone surgery is an endoscopic surgery performed through a 7-8 millimeter hole from the dorsal region.
