Kiss. Dr. Mustafa Kıraç, When and by Which Method is Circumcision Done?

Urology Specialist Op. Dr. Mustafa Kıraç said that circumcision has been a method that has been practiced since ancient times and that it is especially common in Muslim and Jewish societies. Stating that circumcision is defined as the process of removing the skin covering the head of the penis, Kıraç explained that the first circumcision began to be performed in 5 thousand years before Christ. Kıraç reminded that circumcision is accepted as a necessary procedure in Islam and stated that circumcision is also applied to members of other religions.

Kıraç emphasized that circumcision has many benefits, and the most important of these is that the risk of urinary tract infection in young children is significantly reduced after circumcision. Pointing out that the risk of urinary tract infection is approximately 10-12 times higher in uncircumcised children than in circumcised children, Kıraç said, “Another benefit of circumcision is the prevention of penile skin cancer. Penile skin cancer is almost non-existent in circumcised people. "However, this cancer is more common in men who are not circumcised," he said.

Kıraç also pointed out that sexually transmitted diseases are more common in people who are not circumcised, and stated that circumcision significantly reduces this risk. Stating that the virus called HPV (a cancer-causing virus) is less common in people who have been circumcised, Kıraç underlined that circumcision is not only a religious or cultural procedure, but also a beneficial procedure whose medical benefits have been identified and recommended by urologists.

The Most Appropriate Period for Circumcision is After the Age of 6
Kıraç stated that the ideal age for circumcision is shown as the period before the age of 2 and after the age of 6, and said, "However, there is no sufficient medical basis to show that it is harmful to perform it between the ages of 2 and 6. That's why circumcision can be done at any time after the child is born," he said.

Stating that it is generally more appropriate to perform circumcision after the age of 6, Kıraç said that circumcision can sometimes be mandatory. Kıraç said, "For example, if there is stenosis at the tip of the penis, the child will have urination problems and circumcision may be mandatory, or in the presence of frequent urinary tract infections, circumcision may become mandatory."

Ideal Method in Circumcision; Surgical
Kıraç stated that there are many different circumcision methods, but the ideal method is surgical circumcision. Explaining that in the surgical method, the foreskin is cut and stitched in a completely natural way, and then dressed, Kıraç said that circumcision can be performed with local or general anesthesia, but general anesthesia is recommended for the comfort of the patient. Kıraç stated that the dressing applied after the surgery remains for 24 hours and said:

“At the end of 24 hours, the patient enters warm water and removes the dressing himself. After the dressing is removed, no additional dressing or cream is applied. This method is extremely comfortable and tolerable. The recovery time for surgical circumcision is very short. The child returns to normal after 3-4 days. Mass circumcisions are not medically appropriate. Especially in mass circumcisions, sterilization problems and infection problems may arise. Circumcision is not a simple process as it seems. On the contrary, it is a surgical procedure in itself. It must be done by a doctor under hospital conditions. "It is not right for personnel other than doctors to perform circumcision or to perform circumcision in inappropriate environments."
