What is Varicocele Operation?
What is varicocele operation? Varicocele is a swelling of the veins in the scrotum. This problem, which can be seen at almost any age, is usually asymptomatic. Although it is usually asymptomatic, it can be felt when touched or shows symptoms such as pain and swelling. The incidence in the left testicle is much higher than in the right testicle. It 90% occurs in the left testicle. This is due to anatomical reasons. In some cases it occurs in both testicles and rarely in the right testicle.
When detected, it must be examined. First, a physical examination is performed, followed by an ultrasound evaluation. Some patients do not need treatment, while for others surgery is recommended. After a detailed examination, it is decided which path to follow. A treatment program is organized according to the results.
How Long Does Varicocele Surgery Take?
How long does varicocele surgery take? Varicocele surgery is necessary for some patients. Surgery may be preferred especially if the sperm count of young male patients has decreased, if married couples do not have children and because of different testicle sizes. Surgical ligation, i.e. ligation of the veins, is among the treatment options for varicocele. Another option is venous embolization. In venous embolization, the veins are entered through a small incision and the venous obstruction is ensured. This surgery has been observed to increase sperm count and relieve infertility in some patients after a certain period of time.
It is known that varicocele occurs usually in the left testicle for anatomical reasons. However, it can rarely occur in both or only in the right testicle. If it occurs in one testicle, varicocele surgery takes about 1 hour. When it occurs in both testicles, the surgery takes an average of 2 hours. The duration of surgery may vary from patient to patient. It can vary completely depending on the patient's condition, age and health problems.
How is Varicocele Surgery Performed?
How is varicocele surgery performed? For surgery, the patient must first be examined and evaluated in detail. The testicle with varicocele and the degree of varicocele are examined. An ultrasound examination is also performed and the operation is decided accordingly. Surgical ligation can be performed in patients for whom surgery is decided. The most important factor that increases the success of surgery is the application of microsurgical technique.
The method to be applied is determined as a result of the examinations. In addition, it is observed that some patients experience an increase in sperm count and infertility is eliminated following application of these surgical methods. However, the condition may vary from patient to patient.
Post-varicocele Surgery Recovery Period
Post-varicocele surgery recovery period varies from patient to patient. Patients are usually discharged on the day of surgery or after the first postoperative day. They usually return to their daily lives after 4-5 days. Pain is less common with microsurgery and single testicle surgery.
Patients are advised not to perform any heavy activity for about 3 weeks and not to have sexual intercourse for 15 days. Sperm analysis is performed 3 months after the operation.
Care After Varicocele Surgery
Care after varicocele surgery is conducted carefully. You can take a shower on postoperative day 3. Patients should not smoke in the postoperative period for wound healing. Patients should also not perform any heavy activity and sports and not to have sexual intercourse for about 2-3 weeks. Thus, the recovery process progresses better.
